What is a Phase 1 Habitat Survey?
This survey was originally created by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) as a method for rapidly surveying and categorising the habitats in a land plot. This was typically used at a landscape scale to map whole districts. As the method and mapping is widely familiar to ecologists, it has been adopted for use in planning applications.
What is an ‘Extended’ Phase 1 Habitat Survey?
Typically the scale required to map the habitats on project sites is much finer than the original method. There is no standard for an Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey, but the approach is to map a site to a lower scale, include more target notes and also include an appraisal of the site’s potential to support important . Additional surveys may also be incorporated, such as a Bat Survey.
