What is a PEA?
A Preliminary Ecological Appraisal is simply a method for assessing the ecological constraints and opportunities for development at a given site.
The appraisal method was developed by the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM). Their aim was to standardise the approach to ecology assessment and reporting, particularly for planning applications.
A PEA is a combination of a desk study and field survey (typically a phase 1 habitat survey). The work can be undertaken at any time of year.
Will other studies be required?
Our approach is tailored to the project – for simple schemes with no impacts, a single report combining a PEA and an Ecological Impact Assessment may be all that you need to support a planning application. For some projects, additional species surveys and a separate Ecological Impact Assessment could be appropriate.
